What is a Band Size? | ZeroBra Glossary

What is Band Size?

Band size is the numerical measurement (like 32, 34, 36) that represents the circumference around your ribcage, just below your bust. It's the foundation of your bra size and determines how snugly the bra fits around your torso.

How Band Size Works

The band is the part of your bra that goes around your back and provides most of the support – about 80% of it! It's measured in inches and typically ranges from 28 to 44 in Indian sizing. To find your band size, measure around your ribcage with a soft measuring tape, keeping it parallel to the floor and snug but not tight.

Your band size works together with your cup size (A, B, C, D, etc.) to create your complete bra size. For example, if your band measurement is 34 inches and you're a B cup, your bra size would be 34B.

Why Band Size Matters for Comfort

Getting your band size right is crucial for both comfort and support. A band that's too loose won't provide adequate support, causing your bra to ride up your back and putting extra strain on your shoulders. On the other hand, a band that's too tight can dig into your skin, cause bulging, and make breathing uncomfortable.

The perfect band should feel snug and supportive on the loosest hook when new, allowing you to tighten it as the bra stretches over time. You should be able to slide two fingers under the band comfortably.

Who Should Pay Special Attention to Band Size

Band size is especially important for women with larger busts, as they need maximum support from a well-fitted band. Active women who enjoy gymwear also benefit from precise band sizing to prevent movement during workouts.

Pregnant and nursing mothers should regularly check their band size, as ribcage expansion is common during this time. Our maternity and nursing collection offers comfortable options with adjustable features.

Tips for Band Size Success

Remember that band sizes can vary slightly between brands and styles. When shopping for bra tops or regular bras, always check the size chart and consider ordering two sizes if you're between measurements. Your band size may also change with weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, or aging, so it's worth remeasuring every 6-12 months.
